Catalog and Brochure Prepress Checklist
Check dimensions, colors, images, text and production files before printing.
Table of Contents
7 TopicsA file that looks correct on screen may not be print-ready. Wrong dimensions, weak images or folding errors can cause production problems. Check against the printer’s specifications.
Validate technical files
Confirm trim size, bleed and safe areas. Ask about color profile, PDF standard and font embedding. Do not assume identical settings fit every job.
Approve content and physical proofs
Have another person check contacts, prices, dates, codes and page order. Test barcodes and QR codes at actual size. Review binding, folds and proofs before approval.
Illustrative Decision Scenario
Folded brochure panels can appear in a different order once closed. Fold a blank sheet, mark covers and inside panels, then check content order on a low-cost printout. This physical proof can reveal layout errors a PDF review misses.
What to Check Before You Start
- Size, bleed and safe area
- Profile, image and font checks
- Text, numbers and page order
- Proof and written print approval
Frequently Asked Question
Is 300 DPI always enough?
Not by itself. Effective resolution at final size, image type, printing process and viewing distance all matter.
